This mechanical fuel pump is designed to work with stock or mildly modified engines and deliver free-flow outputs from 80 to 130 GPH. The body casting can be rotated 360-degrees to ease mounting in difficult places and it has a shut-off pressure of 7.5 PSI.
Get a fuel pressure gauge, hook it up to the fuel pump test point, and have a helper rev the engine. If the needle doesn't move or doesn't move much, you found the problem. For more tips, including how to check the filter, keep reading our Master Mechanic reviewer's advice!

My holley mechanical fuel pump started to make some noise after 9 years so I went to order a 12-854 and I could not find one. I emailed Holley about it and they told me they stopped production on it and are not making a replacement. That sucks. They still list the part number on there web site...
The conventional installation calls for blocking off the mechanical pump's return-to-tank line and having the unneeded fuel returned to the tank through the Powersurge return port. I see a potential problem with this setup. The Powersurge has a very restricted orifice in the inlet port (from mechanical pump) (pic).
The problem with the mechanical pump on the later models is the timming change cover. They dont have the mechanical pump hook up. I personally would stick to an electric pump and do it right the first time. I thought i would be happy with 6lbs of boost and now after a year i have the itch to step it up to 10lbs. So it's time for me to go electric.
Apr 25, 2011 · Fuel pressures above 7-1/2 psi can create severe fuel control problems and are not recommended. Fuel lines should be a minimum of 3/8”. A Non-restrictive open-element air cleaner kit is recommended (Holley P/N 120-102). The pump cam adjustment kit is available under Holley P/N 20-12.

May 13, 2012 · Its wired with a summit fuel pump relay kit and I have it mount just above the tank behind the rear axle. This isnt the first time I have had this problem. I originally started off with a holley blue pump and it did a similar problem, but the fuel pressure would drop off even worse. My 383 has a 540 HP with Quick fuel 850 with an Edelbrock 1721 mechanical pump with 3/8 line from tank to carb. I used the electric pump on the dyno then switched to the mechanical with no change in performance.
"Most" non racing , mechanical fuel pumps will NOT maintain 6.5 PSI at 6,000 rpm on a 300 hp engine. The fuel demand is higher than the VOLUME of a standard pump. That is why race engines use larger ( 3/8ths up to 1/2" or larger) fuel lines and high volume pumps , often with an electric fuel pump at the rear of the car.

Mechanical fuel pumps were either in full working order or failed -- there was no middle ground -- and a failed pump meant the engine would not start or would grind to a halt; it ran out of gas even with a full tank. Electric fuel pumps, however, can begin to go bad without entirely failing.
Installed on the cylinder block, a mechanical fuel pump is driven by the lobe on the camshaft, creating the vacuum that helps deliver fuel to the engine. Its operating pressure is lower compared to the electric pump, between 4 and 10 PSI, however, a lot of race cars use a carburetor and mechanical fuel pump.
